Unexplained Internet phenomenon: why exactly is Rick Astley all over the Web, 21 years after his biggest hit?

This one should probably be run in its own "Internet Culture" topic, under a category titled "Weird Human Fascinations with Eighties Things". For the uninitiated, "Rick Rolling" is a term describing the deceptive practive of luring unsuspecting Web surfers to click on links that--without their knowledge--lead to Rick Astley's 1987 song "Never Gonna Give You Up". Why is this even worthy of an article? Because the practice is getting sophisticated enough to land some high-profile targets, such as sports teams, politicians and artists, and make headlines in major media outlets, such as the BBC and the Los Angles Times. In our quest to understand the collective Internet brain, we remain dumbfounded by Rick Rolling, wondering if any science can ever offer a plausible explanation for the odd practice.
