Holocaust Denial? School District Pulls Anne Frank's DiarySubmitted by Elteto on Sat, 02/13/2010 - 19:42 |
In a disastrous move that many will probably view as Holocaust denial, Culpeper County Public Schools pulled Anne Frank's diary from the curriculum and from the shelves, because the book contained references to sexuality.
School districts continually prove that they are more worried about political correctness (which most of the time is bigotry in disguise) and appeasing often only one critical parent than about educating children. Common sense does not seem to apply these days when it comes to evaluating the historical and social values of various pieces of literature.
It is inexcusable that instead of even bothering to sit down and discuss an issue, so-called "educators", "Citing a parent’s concern" succumb to pressure in a knee-jerk reaction. With this move, the school district has provided horrible disservice to history, to the community, and most of all, to the students.
Anne Frank's diary is a work that places one of the darkest conflicts in history in context, serving as a warning for future generations. When people charged with ensuring the education of children refuse to pass on the lessons learned from the atrocities committed in World War II, there should be no surprise when these children grow up to be influential leaders in the future, repeating the same mistakes.
Even worse, school boards these days do not seem to learn from the idocity of other bodies of educational regulation, and repeat the mistake themselves again and again.
