Drupal Forks and Distributions

In the spirit of true open source, Drupal has its own forks or distributions, or whatever we want to call them.

Not surprisingly, when an open source solution is stable, flexible and powerful, it is bound to gain a large userbase and scores of developers who want to customize it. The best aspect of such tweaking is that the results are released back to the community. Let us look at some popular Drupal distributions today.

Managing News is a a Drupal customization with focus on aggregating, searching, republishing, and geographically tagging and representing news. It has a very polished and streamlined interface.

Open Atrium is configured out of the box to run as an organizational intranet and project management site. It has a ticketing system, a group dashboard to track member activity, a calendar, document collaboration, and quite a lot more. I remember experimenting with Typo3, at the time declared as one of the most suitable open source intranet content managament systems, and I can clearly see how Open Atrium is moving Drupal into that territory, with all the power of the Drupal modules, themes and the community behind it.

Open Publish is tailored as a news publication platform with emphasis on semantic web technologies, such as OpenCalais.

Pressflow is probably the closest to the original Drupal distribution. Except for a gear replacing the drop logo in the theme, one would not find any noticeable differences until he or she started looking under the hood. This is where Pressflow's advantages surface; this fork is tuned for scalability and performance, but maintains parallel compatibility with Drupal. Full disclosure: this site is running on Pressflow.
