Asterisk is a free software PBX that can run on various platforms and operating systems, and it is expandable with numerous useful modules. Asterisk is the core of many commercially available and community-developed telephony systems. Of course, you may first wonder why you would need a PBX in your house, but when you start reading about what you can do with such a system, you may be encouraged to try Asterisk first on a virtual machine, or install a full system on a dedicated, low-cost PC. Then start experimenting with free U.S. and Canada calls through GoogleVoice, weather reports, dialing local phone numbers through the landline from distant countries, etc…
